Attending the Workshop were experts from CTBTO, US’s Department of Energy, National library Lawrence Livermore and representatives from Malaysia, Indonesia, Myanmar, Thailand and Viet Nam.
Delivering an opening speech at the Workshop, Director Vương Hữu Tấn said that Viet Nam has received CTBTO’s support for establishing the National Data Center (NDC) to connect and exploit database from the International Data Center (IDC) under CTBTO for civil and scientific applications. The Director emphasized that after the Fukushima incident occurred, IDC’s radiation database has been used to inform local people on the distribution of radiation in the atmosphere from Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) to Viet Nam. However, due to limitations in terms of human resources and technical infrastructure, the use of this database is still limited. This Workshop and Training course were opportunities for experts in this field and representatives from South East Asian countries to meet and share experience and professional knowledge together in the establishment and development of NDC, use of IMS data and IDC products for verification activities and civil and scientific use.
The Workshop took place from July 6 to 7, 2015. Right after the Workshop, 2 training courses on radionuclide and seism software were organized from July 8 to 10, 2015.
The Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT) is an important international treaty which is strongly supported by the international community, together with other treaties to contribute towards a peaceful world without nuclear weapons. The International Monitoring System (IMS) of CTBTO consists of 4 fields of advanced technologies as Seismic monitoring, Hydro acoustic Monitoring, Infrasound Monitoring and Radionuclide Monitoring, which has formed a significant database saved and processed in IDC and provided for countries entering into the Treaty. IMS database and IDC products have been used not only for verification activities of the Treaty but also for civil and scientific use. Viet Nam signed the Treaty in 2006 and ratified in 2010./.
